Westside O'Donnell Brothers

The Westside O'Donnell Brothers (no relation to the Southside O'Donnell Brothers) was a bootlegging gang allied to the Al Capone's Chicago Outfit during Prohibition.

Formed by William "Klondike" O'Donnell, with brothers Myles and Bernard O'Donnell, the gang controlled bootlegging operations in Chicago's Westside in the early 1920s. Based between Madison Street and Grand Avenue the O'Donnells negotiated a trade agreement with the Johnny Torrio-Al Capone organization early on, agreeing to allow Johnny Torrio-Al Capone rights to supply 9/10 of Cicero speakeasies with the remainder to the O'Donnells as well as agreeing to act as enforcers against rival gangs, following their expansion into Cicero.

In early-1924 Myles O'Donnell and James J. Doherty shot and killed local Cicero saloon keeper and ex-boxer Eddie Tancl, who had previously refused to purchase beer from Capone, and his bartender Leo Kilmas during a gunfight following an argument with waiter Martin Simet. The gunfight which was seen on the street by several eyewitnesses, including local residents returning from Sunday Mass, as the wounded gangsters fled the scene however no charges were brought against the O'Donnells.

During the next year however the O'Donnells began to turn against Capone as they secretly sided with Capone's rivals, the North Side Gang, during the Capone-Moran gang war, the involvement of O'Donnell gunman James J. Doherty in the murder of Capone ally Samuzzo Amatuna on November 13, and the continued expansion into Cicero. On April 27, 1926 the O'Donnells were ambushed near the Pony Inn, a local Cicero speakeasy, by Capone gunmen during a meeting with Chicago Assistant State's Attorney William McSwiggin killing gunmen Thomas Duffy and James J. Doherty as well as McSwiggen himself although Myles O'Donnell and driver Edward Hanley were uninjured. While the murder of McSwiggin caused a major scandal in the press, as rumors of Capone's personal involvement and claims of a "secret" arrest warrant for Capone's arrest, Capone denied any involvement in the murders and the case was later closed with the Westside O'Donnells slowly disappearing shortly after McSwiggin's death.
