WMUL

WMUL 88.1 FM is a 1,150 watt radio station located in Huntington, West Virginia.
It is a Non-commercial educational campus radio station broadcasting from the campus of Marshall University. The station was the first public radio station to sign on in West Virginia.

The station signal originates from a tower on Marshall's Science Building. The station started with 10 watts of power, but that was increased to 176 watts in the late 1970s and to 1,150 watts in the late 1980s. The station can be heard in southeastern Ohio, the far east side of Kentucky, and as far away as Hurricane, West Virginia.

Sports Programming (FM 88 Sports)

WMUL's sports department covers more Marshall sporting events live than any other media entity. It broadcasts all of Marshall's home college football games, which is a rare opportunity for college radio stations. It also broadcasts Marshall's home soccer, volleyball, basketball (men's and women's), softball and baseball games. The station broadcasts some of Marshall's away football, baseball and softball games, as well as all women's basketball games.

WMUL also produces original sports programming. The Fall 2007 lineup is as follows:

Wednesdays (all live talk shows)
*5:30-6:30p "Sportsview" (Interviews with Marshall coaches and players)
*6:30-8p "Tri-State High School Football Report" (name denotes premise of show)
*8-9p "Sports Buzz" (WMUL staffers compete to make the best argument)

Friday
*5:30-6 p.m. "Herd Roundup" (recap of past week in Marshall athletics)
*6-6:30 p.m. "Conference USA Report" (in-depth breakdown of all games C-USA football teams will participate in that week)

News Programming

The news department broadcasts newsbriefs at the top of the hour from 12-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. The flagship broadcast, "The 5 p.m. Edition of NewsCenter 88," runs for 30 minutes and covers events happening around Marshall, the Huntington tri-state region, and the rest of the nation. It also includes the five-minute "FM 88 Sports Report" and a minute-long "Metro Huntington Weather Forecast." The station also produces news/talk shows each semester and occasionally produces and airs the "Insight Into Old Main" series, dealing with various parts of the Marshall University administration.

Awards

As of summer 2007, the station has won 755 national and regional awards since 1985, the year faculty manager Dr. Charles G. Bailey began tracking awards. The record number of awards attained in one school year was set in 2005-2006, when the station received 77 national and regional awards.

WMUL has won the most awards through the National Broadcasting Society (NBS) contest, winning 200 awards as of 2007. This contest is open only to individual NBS members and member colleges. Another major contest for the station is the West Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Association awards. The station was won more than 150 awards in that contest as of 2007. The WVAPBA is open to all broadcast media, commercial and non-commercial, that includes West Virginia as part or all of its coverage area.
