Thanatopsis
Wikisource has original text related to this article:
Thanatopsis is a poem written by William Cullen Bryant. It is generally considered the first important American poem. One notable aspect is how the point of view changes in the poem, because half was written at the age of 17 and the other half in his sixties. When it was first published in the North American Review, it was considered a hoax. Richard Henry Dana, author of Two Years Before the Mast, told the editor "No one, on this side of the Atlantic is capable of writing such verses."
The title "Thanatopsis" is a combination of the Greek word "Thanatos", which is the personification of death in Greek Mythology, and the Greek suffix "opsis", which means sight or appearance.
The word "Thanatopsis" then means "a meditation upon death."
The poem has been reprinted and referenced up to modern times. In 2001 it was reprinted in The 100 Best Poems of all Time (ISBN 0-446-67681-0) edited by Leslie Pockell. Also three years previous to that an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast may have introduced it to a younger generation by having lines 9-20 used as a song.
