Creiddylad

In Welsh mythology, Creiddylad was a goddess, daughter of Llyr. She was the object of a battle between Gwyn ap Nudd and Gwythr ap Greidawl. In William Shakespeare's King Lear, Cordelia was based on this goddess.

Etymology

This theonym appears to be derived from Proto-Celtic *Kridio-lat-a meaning "heart's feminine lust" (q.v. ).
Following accepted sound laws elucidating systematic diachronic phonological sound change in Celtic proto-linguistics (q.v. ), the Romano-British form of this Proto-Celtic theonym is likely to have been *Cridilata.
