California Washingtonia
The California Washingtonia or California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) is a palm native to the desert oases of southern California, southwest Arizona and extreme northwest Mexico. It grows up to 23 m (exceptionally 30 m) tall in good growing conditions. The leaves have a petiole up to 2 m long, bearing a fan of leaflets 1.5-2 m long. The name honors George Washington, first President of the United States. It is sometimes called the Desert Fan Palm.
Cultivation and uses
California Washingtonia is very widely grown throughout southern California, and also elsewhere, including Dallas, Texas, Miami, Florida, Washington DC, and the Mediterranean region. It prefers warmer, mediterranean climates with winter rain and an arid summer, although they are tolerant of some heavy frost (to about −12°C) and can grow where it is humid. Specimens outside of mediterranean climates do not grow as large, rarely exceeding 15 m.
